According to the latest reports, more than 550 citizens attended the hearings on the draft ward boundaries of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Tuesday, February 22 and Wednesday, February 23.
Based on accounts, officials from the civic body’s election department stated that the final draft of the ward boundaries will be curated in accordance with the recommendations and objections from the citizens. It is slated to be published online on March 2.
It has been reported that the civic authority received 816 suggestions and objections from the citizens as well as political parties regarding the altered ward boundaries. To the changes, the number of electoral wards has increased from 227 to 236.
Moreover, reports have been doing the rounds that the BMC elections will be conducted around April. On the other hand, officials have been quoted in narratives, elaborating on how the majority of the objections are regarding the alteration of boundaries that could affect the political ambitions of many candidates who are hoping to stand for the local body elections.
Since the five-year term of the BMC is ending on March 8, an administrator will be appointed after that because the state government amended the requisite act.
Upon the finalisation of wards, the state election commission will conduct a lottery for the reservation of seats. After which the body will proclaim the code of conduct and election dates.
