A team headed by Dr. Ankit Gupta Paediatric critical care specialist along with Dr. Dipesh Pimple Consultant neurologist and Dr. Vaishali Morey Pediatric nephrologist saved the life of a 1.5-year-old boy with severe acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) which led to multiple organ dysfunction syndromes (MODS), Acute kidney injury (AKI), sepsis, The patient is fine after undergoing treatment

Mustafa Khan a resident of Mira Road suddenly had shortness of breath. Also, for the last 10 days, he had symptoms like fever and not passing urine for 5 days. He was taken to various doctors who failed to provide him with that much-needed relief. However, the patient was referred to Wockhardt Hospitals, Mira Road for timely intervention.

Dr. Ankit Gupta, Paediatric critical care specialist at Wockhardt Hospitals said, “On arrival at 12 am-midnight he was drowsy, shortness of breath, and low saturation. His initial creatinine was 9. He was immediately put on a ventilator and started dialysis. To confirm respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) -CT SCAN was performed which is a life-threatening lung injury leading to fluid build-up in the lungs that hamper the supply of oxygen to the organs. It is a type of respiratory failure after which the organs fail to function properly.  He was given cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) for 30 minutes. It is an emergency lifesaving procedure performed when the heart stops beating. He could have led to death if not treated at the right time. He also developed meningitis during his stay which is an infection in the brain. His kidney function has fully recovered. The baby is alright and achieving developmental milestones for his age.

Dr. Ankit Gupta added, “If any patient is taking a long time for recovery or child is deteriorating, please take expert opinion preferable from a tertiary care center. Timely intervention can be lifesaving.”  

“We were distressed due to our baby’s deteriorating health. He could constantly cry due to symptoms like fever, cough, chest pain, and breathing difficulties. We were extremely worried and didn’t know what to do. Fortunately, the doctors at Wockhardt Hospitals gave us hope and successfully treated our baby. We thank the doctors for giving a fresh lease of life to my baby. My baby is fine and accepting feeds now, he also recognized us and is cheerful like before. I urge other parents to keep a close eye on symptoms such as nagging cough, cold, fever, and exhaustion, and consult the doctor without any delay,” concluded the mother of Mustafa.
